Remembering Chris Heintz, 1938 – 2021

Remembering Chris Heintz, 1938 – 2021

The Heintz family wishes to thank to all who have expressed their sympathies and support following Chris Heintz’s recent passing (on April 30, 2021). As the founder of Zenair and the designer/engineer of Zenith Aircraft’s diverse line of kit airplanes, Heintz has made many contributions to light aviation over the last 50 years.
For more information on Chris’s many accomplishments throughout his career, an Illustrated Biography of his Professional Life was recently published on the Zenair website. “Celebration of Life” events are also being planned for both the upcoming 2021 Zenair Builders Dinner at Oshkosh and the Zenith Banquet at the Zenith Homecoming in September.
Chris’s legacy lives on in the thousands of Heintz-designed light aircraft already flying around the world and in the many additional projects still being built from plans or kits in basement and garage workshops everywhere. Interest in his signature designs continues to grow as his four sons carry-on with the successful operation of Zenair Ltd (Canada) and Zenith Aircraft Co. (in the United States).

When he retired, Chris Heintz wrote a book, Flying on Your Own Wings, to share some of the aeronautical knowledge needed to successfully design and build a light aircraft. The book, now in its third edition, is a summary of his life-long career in designing light aircraft, and in it he presents the complex engineering involved in designing light aircraft in easy-to-follow layman’s terms. The book has become a classic to light airplane designers (whether aeronautical engineers or amateur enthusiasts), while also providing kit builders valuable insights into why aircraft structures are the way they are. There is also ample biographical information and aviation related anecdotes, and in it Heintz shared his musings and life philosophy.

“Fly In to Summer” Open House at Zenith: Saturday, June 19

You’re invited to join us for our informal “Fly In to Summer” Open House and Fly-In at the Zenith Aircraft Factory on Saturday, June 19, as we welcome in summer 2021!

This will be a very informal grass-roots fly-in and open hangar day at the kit manufacturing factory at Mexico Memorial Airport in central Missouri. This is a great opportunity to check out the planes and tour the Zenith aircraft kit factory. Check out the photos from last year’s event, and plan now to join us at the factory on Saturday morning!

Immediately after the Open House event, a group of pilots are heading to the Lake of the Ozarks with their airplanes for a “Fly-Out to the Lake” gathering and primitive camping trip hosted by our friends at UL Power. Check out the video as Dennis Sapp, a local Sport Pilot who has been flying his Zenith STOL light-sport utility aircraft (that he built himself from a Zenith kit) for the past 12 years, flies to the Lake of the Ozarks to the remote grass strip for the overnight camping tripCheck out the video from the 2020 Fly-Out.

Attending Zenith Aircraft’s famous hands-on workshop at the kit aircraft factory is the easiest way to get started on your very own airplane! Plan now to join us at an upcoming workshop at the Zenith Aircraft factory:

Zenith Aircraft Company’s factory workshops are popular with sport aviation enthusiasts, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in building their own Zenith Aircraft kit plane. Participants get to actually start assembling kit parts under the direction and guidance of factory professionals, and “graduate” from the workshop upon completing construction of their own aircraft rudder tail section.

The in-person factory workshop makes an excellent getaway for you and your spouse or a friend! Spend a couple of days at the Zenith Aircraft factory and meet with fellow aviation enthusiasts – all while gaining valuable hands-on building skills. A demo flight is part of the factory workshop experience in a Zenith factory demo airplane!

Now is a great time to start building your own aircraft (or to continue to build). Getting started building your own aircraft is now even easier than ever. Contact Zenith Aircraft to discuss getting started on your own project: 573-581-9000 (Mon – Fri, 8 – 5 Central).
Zenith Aircraft Company will be closed Monday, May 31st, to observe Memorial Day. We will open on Tuesday, June 1st.

Also next week, join us if you can for a free lunch on Friday, June 4, at the Zenith Aircraft factory! We’ll serve a BBQ lunch (brats and hotdogs) at noon at the factory at Mexico Memorial Airport (KMYJ). Fly-in or drive in.
